Day 4 | The B-I-B-L-E

The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes that's the book for me,
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E.

Y'all recognize this familiar childhood song, right?  It's an oldie but goodie.  But do we actually stand alone on the Word of God?

No spiritual discipline is more important than hearing, reading, and studying God's Word.  It's essential for growing in Him.  Yet, so many believers neglect to open up their Bibles and benefit from the Scriptures.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.  2 Timothy 3:16

Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.  Revelations 1:3

If you don't ready anything else in this post, read this:
Surely we only have to be realistic and honest with ourselves to know how regularly we need to turn to the Bible.  How often do we face problems, temptations and pressure?  Every day!  Then how often do we need instruction, guidance and greater encouragement?  Every day!  To catch all these felt needs up into an even greater issue, how often do we need to see God's face, hear his voice, feel his touch, know his power?  The answer to all these questions is the same:  every day!  As the American evangelist D.L. Moody put it, "A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months, or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain life for a week.  We much draw upon God's boundless store of grace from day to day as we need it."  John Blanchard, How to Enjoy Your Bible

Helpful Tips:
When studying God's Word, I would suggest a study Bible, maybe a reading plan, a highlighter/pen, a journal, and some quiet time.  Think about studying the Word like studying anything else--it takes effort, thought, time, and quiet.   You might also consider following a sermon series by a particular pastor through the given text you are studying. In the coming days, I will be sharing some of my favorite podcasts. Personally, I love the ESV Study Bible.  As I read, I am able to follow along with the commentary and get a much better grasp on the text.

  3. Thank you for this post of encouragement! As soon as I read the title of your post I immediately sang to myself "yes that's the book for me"! I am guilty of not making time for the Lord through the Word and this was great encouragement to me! This week I am starting an 8-week New Testament challenge with my church so am I excited to dive in!
