I have been wanting to make some cornice boards for me AG ever since I finished her room last April! And....almost a year later, I finally carved out some time and made a pair! They were easy, cheap, and quick to do.
I saw some on Pinterest that involved carpentry...uh, that would be a big fat NO for me.
I came up with a way to make some cornice boards minus the carpentry...
The Styrofoam came from Lowe's and it's a little less that $10.00 a sheet. (If you ever need to move a flat screen TV, it's great for protecting the screen--I know first hand!)
DUCT TAPE!?! Yep! Trust me, the end result is pretty sturdy and you can't even tell they are made of styrofoam and duct tape.
I used a staple gun to attach the batting and fabric to the Styrofoam.
Also, I tried to line the edges of my boards with bias tape, but it was too tedious and temperamental. I opted to remove it and keep it simple.
I must add, the obsessive-side of me used the leftover fabric to cover the backs of the boards. Now they look finished from the outside looking in.
I'm not going to lie, I think my fabric choice may be a little too busy. I stressed over this pink Waverly and a yellow chevron. I'm feeling like there is too much pink in her room. They are finished, they are up, and they ain't comin' down for a long while.
I read a few different ways to attach the cornice to the wall. I decided to use a small nail and tack the side of the board to the window frame...easy enough.
From start to finish, this took me about two hours. Not bad at all!
*Update: I made these cornice boards almost three years ago and they are still just as beautiful as the day they were installed! It was so easy to take them down, change the fabric, and hang again!

How did you hang them and how do I measure how big to make them?? Is batting just the cotton and you layer it first then your material?

ReplyDeleteLinda, yes...I used a staple gun. I'm sure that fabric glue would work, but I used batting behind the fabric so it was easiest to hold it all together. Hope that helps.
